RuddersGreen
They are coming to get you @SlimPickins http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/health/10203577/Father-of-four-dies-after-horsefly-bite.html Father of four dies after horsefly bite A father-of-four has died after he suffered a massive allergic reaction to a horsefly bite. Andy Batty, 48, was helping his daughter Catherine, 17, ride her pony Bess when the insect bit him and he collapsed in agony. The 6ft engineer went into anaphylactic shock, and died before paramedics could get to the scene. Experts have said that for the common bite to kill is practically unheard of, and Mr Batty must have been genetically predisposed to suffering such a reaction. Dr Bill Frankland, consultant allergist at the London Allergy Clinic, said: "It's very rare for someone to die as a result of being bitten by a horsefly, I’ve certainly never come across it. "As with all insect anaphylaxis, the man will have probably died within 15 minutes of being bitten. It's normally a very sudden and immediate death. "This is a very unusual case, people shouldn't worry if they get bitten by a horsefly as the likelihood of someone being this allergic is extremely rare." Mr Batty was pronounced dead in the field near his home in Brixham, Devon, after he was bitten on Sunday. Catherine, who lived with her father and is taking equestrian studies at Duchy College, Cornwall, is being comforted by friends as the family struggled The former taxi driver had three other children, James, Michael and Rachel, from his first marriage. His friend John Rugman described Mr Batty as a keen horse lover, adding: "He was a fantastic father, he doted on Catherine and wanted her to go as far in her passion for horses as she possibly could. "He was so so proud of her. He was an absolutely fantastic man, he would do anything for anybody without question. "He was a great friend to all of us and we're absolutely devastated by the shocking news." Chris Forster, chairman of Brixham Rugby Club where Mr Batty worked as a steward, added: "Andy's death is very sad. I spoke to his daughter who he was absolutely devoted to. "It is very raw for her. She is in shock. He always did what he could to help. He was very well liked. Everyone at the club has been saddened by the news." Mr Batty’s former colleagues at KJ Engineering expressed their shock that a man they describe as a “jolly giant” was killed by a tiny bug. Manager Keith Iszard said: "Andy was a big fellow. He was 6ft tall and very broad like a rugby front row man. He could lift any weight. "We couldn't believe a small fly could knock him down. His death has come as a massive shock to everyone here. "Andy was a lovely man. He was a jolly giant and was always very friendly and would volunteer to help anyone. Andy was very well regarded by everyone. Everyone liked him." Horse fly is the most widely-used name for members of the tabanidae family. They frequently attack humans and livestock and are widely regarded as pests because their bites can carry diseases and parasites. The bugs use knife-like mandibles to rip flesh apart making them much more painful than a mosquito bite. They can cause a rash, dizziness, wheezing, swelling and infection, but the victim normally makes a full recovery. Lindsey McManus of national charity Allergy UK added: "Anaphylaxis to a horsefly bite is incredibly rare. "It is more common for people to develop localised infection and pain around the bite. "As with any allergic reaction the sufferer would have previously developed antibodies, in this case, to the horsefly allergen, by being bitten previously. "The body's immune system reacts on further contact by producing chemicals such as histamine, which cause the symptoms that we recognise as allergy including itching, swelling, rashes, and in the most severe form, anaphylaxis. "This is very unusual and although horsefly bites can be painful, the likelihood of someone being this allergic is very rare indeed."
