The word originates from the ancient Greek politika meaning roughly 'affairs of state'. What the word politics means nowadays is, as has been alluded to earlier, generally the nonsense that surrounds the electoral process - politics nowadays means, in that sense, nothing more than 'popularity contest', with little or no genuine politics getting in the way of the PR.
